When tornado-force winds ripped
large sections of the curtain wall off Indiana’s second-tallest
building, the 35-story Regions Bank Tower in downtown Indianapolis,
the owner immediately called Jungclaus to help with this catastrophe.
Major downtown streets were closed, even as
sensitive papers from law offices continued to rain down from
a tower that had been opened like a tin can. Open to the elements
and lacking a sprinkler system, the building was closed.
Using all the skills that we had developed over
many years with ProSafety™ – and a few new ones
– Jungclaus analyzed the Safety risks and devised a
complete Safety protocol to assure Safe working conditions
for those working in the building as well as public Safety
professionals on the streets below.
Tellingly, even with all the layers of Safety
planning, inspection and review on this project, we continued
to provide additional Safety training. After all, the dangers
were unprecedented and thus beyond what workers had experience
in handling. Thus, one afternoon we brought some 120 workers
together for additional training. One senior ironworker gave
a moving personal Safety testimonial that made an indelible
impression. Then, with $950 of pizza we celebrated our Safety
commitment and success.
Indeed, we had something to celebrate. When
the job was done, we had completed $5 million in round-the-clock
work (mostly labor) without a single injury or even one close
call.
